policymakers via the "revolving door". One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before
being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the
authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods
and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company's vice president for public policy.
Thanks to these intimate links between Monsanto and government agencies, the US adopted GE foods and crops without
proper testing, without consumer labeling and in spite of serious questions hanging over their safety. Not
coincidentally, Monsanto supplies 90 percent of the GE seeds used by the US market. Monsanto's long arm stretched
so far that, in the early nineties, the US Food and Drugs Agency even ignored warnings of their own scientists, who
were cautioning that GE crops could cause negative health effects. Other tactics the company uses to stifle

Aspartame 101: Why It Can Wreck Your Health
Aspartame is primarily made up of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. The phenylalanine has been synthetically
modified to carry a methyl group, which provides the majority of the sweetness. That phenylalanine methyl bond,
called a methyl ester, is very weak, which allows the methyl group on the phenylalanine to easily break off and
form methanol.
You may have heard the claim that aspartame is harmless because methanol is also found in fruits and
vegetables. However, in fruits and vegetables, the methanol is firmly bonded to pectin,
allowing it to be safely passed through your digestive tract. Not so with the methanol created by aspartame;
it’s not bonded to anything that can help eliminate it from your body.
Methanol is a serious neurotoxin because it acts as a Trojan horse and it's carried into susceptible tissues
in your body, like your brain and bone marrow, where the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme converts it into
formaldehyde, which wreaks havoc with sensitive proteins and DNA.
All animals except humans have a protective mechanism that allows methanol to be broken down
into harmless formic acid. While humans do have the same number of peroxisomes (small structures in cells
designed to detoxify chemicals) in comparable cells as animals, human peroxisomes
cannot convert the toxic formaldehyde into harmless formic acid, so the formaldehyde is
free to cause enormous damage in your tissues.
There IS an Obvious Biological Explanation for Aspartame Reactions...
The industry is fond of claiming that there’s “no biological explanation” for the health problems reported
by so many after consuming aspartame. Of course, this is meant to make you think such reports aren’t true, or
are unrelated to aspartame. Alas, there is in fact an obvious biological explanation according to
Dr. Monte:
"Here is the story: there is a major biochemical problem here," he says. "Methyl
alcohol is known now, and has been known since 1940, to be metabolized differently by humans from every
other animal."
Here’s how it works: Both animals and humans have small structures called peroxisomes in each cell. There
are a couple of hundred in every cell of your body, which are designed to detoxify a variety of chemicals.
Peroxisome contains catalase, which help detoxify methanol. Other chemicals in the peroxisome convert the
formaldehyde to formic acid, which is harmless, but this last step occurs only in animals. When
methanol enters the peroxisome of every animal except humans, it gets into that mechanism.
Humans do have the same number of peroxisomes in comparable cells as animals, but
human peroxisomes cannot convert the toxic formaldehyde into harmless formic
acid.
So to recap: In humans, the methyl alcohol travels through your blood vessels into sensitive areas, such as
your brain, that are loaded with ADH, which converts methanol to formaldehyde. And since there's no catalase
present, the formaldehyde is free to cause enormous damage in your tissues.

the most dangerous
places in the world.

Why has a flame retardant chemical banned in Europe and
Japan been used as an ingredient in North American sodas for decades?
If you live in the United States and drink citrus-flavored sodas such as Mountain Dew, you may be ingesting this
substance that has health professionals up in arms.
A synthetic chemical known as brominated vegetable oil (BVO) — first patented by chemical companies as a flame
retardant — is increasingly being identified as a threat to your health, but soda companies still have yet to
remove BVO as an ingredient.
Added to about 10% of sodas in North America for decades, BVO has reportedly led to soda-drinkers experiencing
skin lesions, memory loss, and nerve disorders. Interestingly, these are all the symptoms of
overexposure to bromine. What is most concerning is the fact that studies have found that
BVO can actually build up in human tissue, accumulating in large quantities over long periods of soda
consumption.
Industry Reports Set “Safety Limit” on BVO
Is it any surprise that reports from a
group within the industry were instrumental in establishing limits on what the FDA considers a
“safe limit” for BVO in sodas?
Scientists have disputed the supposed safety level, stating that not only is the data frail, but the research is
several decades old and needs to be re-examined. Meanwhile, soda drinkers are being exposed to this toxic flame
retardant chemical on a daily basis. It is not uncommon for some Americans to drink upwards of 5-6 sodas per day,
and Mountain Dew is a popular choice among soda lovers.
‘Aside from these reports, the scientific data is scarce,’ said Walter Vetter, a food chemist at
Germany’s University of Hohenheim and author of a recent, but unpublished, study on BVO in European soda
imports.
Imagine the amount of BVO that has accumulated in the tissue of a lifelong soda drinker.
How can you tell which sodas contain BVO? Well, Mountain Dew, Squirt, Fanta Orange, Sunkist Pineapple, Gatorade
Thirst Quencher Orange, and Powerade Strawberry Lemonade or Fresca Original Citrus all contain BVO. This is a not a
complete list, however, and it is important to check the ingredient list.
Sodas should be avoided regardless of BVO content, as BVO is not the only ingredient you need to worry about.
Many sodas contain mercury-filled high-fructose
corn syrup, or the carcinogenic artificial sweetener
aspartame.
You can even hold a bottle of Mountain Dew up to a light and see the presence of BVO. BVO creates the cloudy
look of the beverage by keeping the ‘fruity flavor’ mixed into the drink. Without the presence of BVO, the
flavoring would float to the surface and separate.

enterprise.

We know there are toxins in our foods. These toxins exist
in varying levels and come from sources like pesticides, soil contamination, and even the seeds themselves. We can
minimize our exposure to these toxins by eating organic and growing our own foods. But, we are all still being
exposed at one level or another. A recent, frightening study indicates even the “average” person is being exposed
to cancerous levels of toxins like arsenic, dioxins, and DDE.
The research comes from the University of California, Davis, where scientists looked at the diets and related
toxin-levels of 364 children between the ages of 2 and 7, 446 parents of young children, and 149 older adults. What
they found was not only troubling, but truly scary.
Using dietary surveys and toxin content datasets, the scientists were able to determine an estimated toxin level
and compare this to the “cancer benchmark” of each compound. (The “cancer benchmark” is a term used to describe the
“exposure level that would generate one excess cancer per million people over a 70-year lifetime”, according to
NaturalNews.
In both children and adults, cancer benchmarks were exceeded for dioxins, DDE, dieldrin, lead, and arsenic.
Children also exceeded the cancer benchmark for the toxin chlordane. In all cases, children had greater exposure
margins than adults. When it came to DDE, children exceeded the cancer benchmark level by more than 10 times. For
dieldrin, arsenic, and dioxins, their exposure level was 100 times over the cancer benchmark levels.
We could write a book on the potentially disastrous effects of these toxins, but to put it briefly: DDE is a
metabolite of DDT (the now-banned pesticide), which has been linked to cell damage at a DNA level. Chlordane, also
banned, is linked to cancer, neorutoxicity and low birth weight. Another banned substance, dieldrin is a suspected
cancer and Parkinson’s disease-causer. Finally, arsenic is linked to cancers of the bladder, liver, lung, and
kidneys.
