No serious sociologist any longer believes that the voice of the people expresses any divine or specially wise and lofty idea. The voice of the people expresses the mind of the people, and that mind is made up for it by the group leaders…and by those persons who understand the manipulation of public opinion.
If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, is it not possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing about it?
Whatever attitude one chooses toward this condition…we are dominated by the small number of persons who understand the mental processes of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind and contrive new ways to guide the world.
Political campaigns today are all sideshows…A presidential candidate may be “drafted” in response to “overwhelming popular demand,” but it is well known that his name may be decided upon by half a dozen men sitting around a table in a hotel room.
The conscious manipulation of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.
Bertrand Russell, historian, philosopher, mathematician, cofounder of analytic philosophy,32 and expert on the scientific method of human manipulation, describes a global “society of experts” this way:
The society of experts will control propaganda and education. It will teach loyalty to the world government, and make nationalism high treason. The government, being an oligarchy, will instill submissiveness into the great bulk of the population…It is possible that it may invent ingenious ways of concealing its own power, leaving the forms of democracy intact, and allowing the plutocrats or politicians to imagine that they are cleverly controlling these forms…whatever the outward forms may be, all real power will come to be concentrated in the hands of those who understand the art of scientific manipulation.33
Purveyors of the democratic illusion assure us that sophisticated conspiracies and powerful secret societies exist only in the mind of paranoids and extremists. Their assurances are a lie. (1928), Bernays argued that the manipulation of public opinion was a necessary part of democracy: The conscious
and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in
democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government
which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our
ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our
democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live
together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of
politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small
number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull
the wires which control the public mind.
In the 1920s, working for the American Tobacco Company, he sent a group of young
models to march in the New York City parade. He then told the press that a group of women's rights marchers
would light "Torches of Freedom". On his signal, the models lit Lucky Strike cigarettes in front of the eager
photographers. The New York Times (1 April 1929) printed: "Group of Girls Puff at Cigarettes as a Gesture of
'Freedom'". This helped to break the taboo against women smoking in public.
Bernays helped the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) and other special interest
groups to convince the American public that water fluoridation was safe and beneficial to human health. This was
achieved by using the American Dental Association in a highly successful media campaign.
Edward Bernays has been cited as the inventor of the consumerist culture that was
designed primarily to target people's self-image (or lack thereof) in order to turn a want into a need. This was
initially envisioned for products such as cigarettes, for example. However, Bernays also noted in his 1928 book,
Propaganda, that propaganda is the executive arm of the invisible government. This can be seen most clearly in the
modern police state and the growing citizen snitch culture, wrapped up in the pseudo-patriotic War on Terror. The
increasing consolidation of media has enabled the entire corporate structure to merge with government, which now
utilizes the concept of propaganda placement. Media; print, movies, television, and cable news can now work
seamlessly to integrate an overall message which seems to have the ring of truth because it comes from so many
sources, simultaneously. When one becomes attuned to identifying the main message, one will see this imprinting
everywhere.

Propaganda, an influential book written by Edward L. Bernays in 1928, incorporated the literature from social science and psychological manipulation into an examination of the techniques of public communication. Bernays wrote the book in response to the success of some of his earlier works such as Crystallizing Public Opinion (1923) and A Public Relations Counsel (1927). Propaganda explored the psychology behind manipulating masses and the ability to use symbolic action and propaganda to influence politics, effect social change, and lobby for gender and racial equality.[1] Walter Lippman was Bernays’ unacknowledged American mentor and his work The Phantom Public greatly influenced the ideas expressed in Propaganda a year later.[2] The work propelled Bernays into media historians’ view of him as the “father of public relations

Lifting of US Propaganda Ban Gives New Meaning to Old

Though its ostensible purpose is to fund the U.S. military over a one year period, the National Defense Authorization Act, better known as the NDAA, has had numerous provisions tucked into it over the years that have targeted American civil liberties. The most well-known of these include allowing the government to wiretap American citizens without a warrant and, even more disturbingly, indefinitely imprison an American citizen without charge in the name of “national security.”
One of the lesser-known provisions that have snuck their way into the NDAA over the years was a small piece of legislation tacked onto the NDAA for fiscal year 2013, signed into law in that same year by then-President Barack Obama. Named “The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012,” it completely lifted the long-existing ban on the domestic dissemination of U.S. government-produced propaganda.
For decades, the U.S. government had been allowed to produce and
disseminate propaganda abroad in order to drum up support for its foreign wars but had been banned from
distributing it domestically after the passage of the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948. However, the Modernization Act’s
co-authors, Reps. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) and Adam Smith (D-WA, no relation to the Smith of the 1948
act),
asserted that removing the
domestic ban was necessary in order to combat “al-Qaeda’s and other violent extremists’ influence among
populations.”

Two House lawmakers have introduced a resolution that seeks to deepen US Military involvement in Africa on the back of the Kony 2012 hoax, despite the fact that Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army have been virtually inactive for six years.
"The resolution, introduced by Reps. Jim McGovern, D-Mass. and Ed Royce, R-Calif., calls for, among other things, expanding the number of regional forces in Africa to protect civilians and placing restrictions on individuals or governments found to be supporting Kony," reports CBS News.
As we have seen from US involvement in Libya and its attempts to destabilize Syria, the "humanitarian" justification is merely an excuse for expanding US hegemony into Africa where China has aggressively staked its claim.
As we highlighted on Monday, the establishment-manufactured hype surrounding Kony 2012 is nothing more than a cynical ruse designed to manipulate naive do-gooders into legitimizing another US-backed "humanitarian" assault aimed at swallowing up Africa's resources and land under Africom.
While Joseph Kony and his army disappeared six years ago, Ugandans are being killed and evicted in their thousands by western entities right now -- but nobody is making 'viral' films about the crisis and no celebrities are tweeting their displeasure.
Invisible Children, the group behind Kony 2012 has created a groundswell of support for Uganda's dictator Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a man who has been in control of the country for 30 years and was returned to power in an election last year that was rife with fraud according to European Union observers.
Museveni has been implicated in genocide after ordering his guards to shoot and kill civilians. He is also notorious for bumping off his political enemies. "The group is in favour of direct military intervention, and their money supports the Ugandan government's army and various other military forces," writes the Visible Children website, which has documented the hoax behind Kony 2012. "Here's a photo of the founders of Invisible Children posing with weapons and personnel of the Sudan People's Liberation Army. Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People's Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them, arguing that the Ugandan army is "better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries", although Kony is no longer active in Uganda and hasn't been since 2006 by their own admission. These books each refer to the rape and sexual assault that are perennial issues with the UPDF, the military group Invisible Children is defending."
The Kony 2012 group itself has been exposed as a ruthless business empire that spends the majority of its income on its own expenses. The organization refuses to allow its financials to be properly audited and has a low two-star rating in accountability from Charity Navigator.

While it may rate up there with the best in gaming, America's Army is not an exercise in largesse towards the gaming community. It's essentially a propaganda tool funded to the tune of more than $US10 million ($A11.1 million) of US taxpayers' money designed to attract young people to military life.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 amended the Smith-Mundt Act and effectively killed any nominal restraints on the use of propaganda against domestic audiences. Since then the Pentagon has had free rein to win over U.S. hearts and minds, spending extra effort to target the millennial crowd. Late Night with Seth Meyers is just one example of many illustrating how well the Pentagon has stepped up its game.
The Pentagon has stepped up its propaganda game in the Internet age. Tapping into the millennial mind requires more than hackneyed advertisements and catchy slogans. It requires celebrity, humor, and flattery. Seth Meyers, the host of Late Night, is happy to help out.
How does millennial propaganda work?
Meyers sets the stage by framing those in uniform as “our nation’s armed forces,” when in reality they exist to fight for corporate interest, to take out regional competitors of Israel, and to keep the oil flowing. The U.S. war budget is a direct transfer of roughly $1 trillion each year into war corporations. In other words, the funds are public but the profits are private. Members of the U.S. military are anything but “our nation’s armed forces.”
Meyers then effectively portrays the Secretary of War, a position occupied at the time by Ashton Carter, as an avuncular soul. Carter performs well. He switches fluidly between grinning buffoon and goodhearted protector. This is a deliberate deception. Carter spent most of his life in service of the war machine, using his formidable brainpower to provide research, policy analysis, and academic backing.
Nowhere is the Pentagon’s environmental destruction mentioned. Nowhere is Carter’s body count mentioned. Civilian deaths in Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, and the Philippines, are deliberately excluded when pulling the wool over the eyes of sensitive millennials. Nowhere does this slick propaganda piece mention Carter’s coopting of Silicon Valley, his support for the Egyptian dictator, his expansion of USAFRICOM, or his avid love for the Saudi regime. Well done.
Jokes abound. They’re well placed, designed to obviate any criticism of Pentagon policy. Meyers jokes about invading sovereign nations, which the Pentagon actually does with unamusing regularity. Meyers jokes about weak nuclear security, even though lapses in the security of the U.S. arsenal are no laughing matter. (Upon discovering terrible security practices, the Pentagon just declares the status of its nuclear incompetence a secret.)
Meyers frequently reminds the viewer that the Pentagon is home to “two-hundred and eighty four bathrooms,” but conveniently omits the fact that numerous extra bathrooms were included in the building’s design in order to comply with Virginia’s racist segregation laws ( Carroll, p. 4). Meyers should have instead stated that the Pentagon is home to 24,000 bureaucrats who would better serve the country and the world by becoming teachers, doctors, farmers, and firefighters.
Seth Meyers remarks, “One of the great things about the Pentagon are all the interesting items they have on display.” He then shows the personal property of a leader whose country the Pentagon destroyed during an illegal war. Not included in the display cases are: 1) the corpses of the more than 1 million Iraqis who lost their lives as a direct result of the Pentagon’s actions; 2) splintered shells of U.S. ordnance launched from unmanned aerial vehicles against civilians and gangs in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and throughout the Greater Middle East; 3) soil and water samples from towns the Pentagon polluted; 4) the bodies of U.S. pawns who died overseas, images of which Pentagon policy conceals unless families of the deceased request an exemption; 5) pictures of the thousands of veterans who have taken their own lives after being used and abused by the U.S. war machine.
During the question and answer session, Secretary of War Ashton Carter admits that he wants to appeal to the 18-24 year old demographic. He then calls the U.S. military the “finest fighting force the world has ever known,” yet the Pentagon hasn’t won a single war in the lifetime of a twenty-four year old.
Hats off to the tag team of Carter and Meyers. Their ruse has worked, judging by the live audience’s reactions and the enthusiastic comment section below the video. The Pentagon dictates the terms, and the U.S. populace largely accepts its disinformation and outright lies. The lesson is clear: we have to learn to see through the Pentagon’s propaganda if we ever want to live in a world without war.

CIA’s long term effort to control the news, has shifted into overdrive.
On July 2, a little noticed “reform” passed in January went into effect. The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012, passed as part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, will allow the CIA to flood America with more government propaganda.
The Smith-Mundt Act, passed as the national security state was taking shape in 1948, authorized the State Department to unleash a tidal wave of propaganda outside the United States while supposedly forbidding its dissemination inside the country. The law set the stage for Frank Wisner, who headed up the CIA’s covert action division in the early 1950s, to build his “mighty Wurlitzer,” described by none other than the New York Times as “the means for orchestrating, in almost any language anywhere in the world, whatever tune the CIA was in the mood to hear.”
In the years since, the establishment media has worked hand in glove with the CIA. This cozy relationship was revealed by Frank Church and the Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities in 1975 and, a few years later, by reporter Carl Bernstein.
“Among the chief executives who helped the CIA were William Paley of CBS, Henry Luce of Time, Arthur Sulzberger of the New York Times, Barry Bingham Sr. of the Louisville Courier-Journal, and James Copley of the Copley News Service,” write Amy Goodman and David Goodman in Unreality TV, The Mighty Wurlitzer, Hijacking Public Media, a chapter from the book Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back. “The leading TV networks, including ABC and NBC, and the wire services-AP, UPI, Reuters, along with Hearst Newspapers, Scripps Howard, Newsweek, the Miami Herald, and the Saturday Evening Post all had dealings with the spy agency. The CIA’s most valuable associations were with the New York Times, CBS, and Time Inc.”
This media penetration by the CIA is not merely a baseless conspiracy theory as some might argue, but is backed up by CIA office memos released under FOIA revealing the placement of “important assets” inside every major news organization in the country. “It was not until 1982 that the Agency openly admitted that reporters on the CIA payroll have acted as case officers to agents in the field,” writes Alex Constantine.
“Most consumers of the corporate media were – and are – unaware of the effect that the salting of public opinion has on their own beliefs,” Constantine continues. “A network anchorman in time of national crisis is an instrument of psychological warfare in the MOCKINGBIRD media. He is a creature from the national security sector’s chamber of horrors. For this reason consumers of the corporate press have reason to examine their basic beliefs about government and life in the parallel universe of these United States.”
Despite the promise of the Smith-Mundt Act – that a firewall stands between foreign and domestic propaganda – the CIA, the bastard child of Wall Street lawyers, has never honored its charter (prohibiting domestic operation) and has consistently utilized the corporate media as a propaganda machine.
Enactment of the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act underscores the fact the CIA no longer pretends to honor its charter and refrains from flooding the media with government propaganda. “The evaporation of Smith-Mundt and other provisions to safeguard U.S. citizens against government propaganda campaigns is part of a larger trend within the diplomatic and military establishment,” ace reporter Michael Hastings wrote in May, 2012, more than a year before his assassination.
In fact, this “larger trend” has been in effect since the imposition of the National Security Act in 1947 and the establishment of the National Security Council, the principal forum used by the financial elite and their intelligence apparatus to dictate policy to the president of the United States and the State Department.

“Conspiracy theory” is a term that at once strikes fear and anxiety in the hearts of most every public figure, particularly journalists and academics. Since the 1960s the label has become a disciplinary device that has been overwhelmingly effective in defining certain events off limits to inquiry or debate. Especially in the United States raising legitimate questions about dubious official narratives destined to inform public opinion (and thereby public policy) is a major thought crime that must be cauterized from the public psyche at all costs.
Conspiracy theory’s acutely negative connotations may be traced to liberal historian Richard Hofstadter’s well-known fusillades against the “New Right.” Yet it was the Central Intelligence Agency that likely played the greatest role in effectively “weaponizing” the term. In the groundswell of public skepticism toward the Warren Commission’s findings on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the CIA sent a detailed directive to all of its bureaus. Titled “Countering Criticism of the Warren Commission Report,” the dispatch played a definitive role in making the “conspiracy theory” term a weapon to be wielded against almost any individual or group calling the government’s increasingly clandestine programs and activities into question.
This important memorandum and its broad implications for American politics and public discourse are detailed in a forthcoming book by Florida State University political scientist Lance de-Haven-Smith, Conspiracy Theory in America. Dr. de-Haven-Smith devised the state crimes against democracy concept to interpret and explain potential government complicity in events such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the major political assassinations of the 1960s, and 9/11.
“CIA Document 1035-960” was released in response to a 1976 FOIA request by the New York Times. The directive is especially significant because it outlines the CIA’s concern regarding “the whole reputation of the American government” vis-à-vis the Warren Commission Report. The agency was especially interested in maintaining its own image and role as it “contributed information to the [Warren] investigation.”
The memorandum lays out a detailed series of actions and techniques for “countering and discrediting the claims of the conspiracy theorists, so as to inhibit the circulation of such claims in other countries.” For example, approaching “friendly elite contacts (especially politicians and editors)” to remind them of the Warren Commission’s integrity and soundness should be prioritized. “[T]he charges of the critics are without serious foundation,” the document reads, and “further speculative discussion only plays in to the hands of the [Communist] opposition.”
The agency also directed its members “[t]o employ propaganda assets to [negate] and refute the attacks of the critics. Book reviews and feature articles are particularly appropriate for this purpose.”
1035-960 further delineates specific techniques for countering “conspiratorial” arguments centering on the Warren Commission’s findings. Such responses and their coupling with the pejorative label have been routinely wheeled out in various guises by corporate media outlets, commentators and political leaders to this day against those demanding truth and accountability about momentous public events.
- No significant new evidence has emerged which the [Warren] Commission did not consider.
- Critics usually overvalue particular items and ignore others.
- Conspiracy on the large scale often suggested would be impossible to conceal in the United States.
- Critics have often been enticed by a form of intellectual pride: they light on some theory and fall in love with it.
- Oswald would not have been any sensible person’s choice for a co-conspirator.
- Such vague accusations as that “more than ten people have died mysteriously” [during the Warren Commission’s inquiry] can always be explained in some natural way e.g.: the individuals concerned have for the most part died of natural causes.
Today more so than ever news media personalities and commentators occupy powerful positions for initiating propaganda activities closely resembling those set out in 1035-960 against anyone who might question state-sanctioned narratives of controversial and poorly understood occurrences. Indeed, as the motives and methods encompassed in the document have become fully internalized by intellectual workers and operationalized through such media, the almost uniform public acceptance of official accounts concerning unresolved events such as the Oklahoma City Murrah Federal Building bombing, 9/11, and most recently the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, is largely guaranteed.
The effect on academic and journalistic inquiry into ambiguous and unexplained events that may in turn mobilize public inquiry, debate and action has been dramatic and far-reaching. One need only look to the rising police state and evisceration of civil liberties and constitutional protections as evidence of how this set of subtle and deceptive intimidation tactics has profoundly encumbered the potential for future independent self-determination and civic empowerment.

The recent replacement of Jay Leno with Obama cheerleader Jimmy Fallon is part of a White House coup d’état to take control of late night television.
With more and more young Americans deserting news networks and getting their information and opinions from late night comedy/discussion shows, the establishment is moving into using the entertainment industry as its primary conduit for state propaganda.
Distrust in the institution of television news is hovering at all time lows, which is why one of the few places left that the White House can elicit a sympathetic response to its agenda and talking points is the cosy, make believe world of late night TV.
While Barack Obama is pursuing a chillingly dictatorial political agenda based around executive tyranny, Jimmy Fallon is helping to massage Obama’s image as a down to earth, fun loving guy that you can trust.
While Jay Leno savaged Obamacare in his final weeks as host, one of Fallon’s first acts was to afford Michelle Obama the platform of The Tonight Show to push Obamacare talking points. Fallon even once gushed that President Obama “booked himself”.
While the media has pondered on the mystery of Leno being replaced (he enjoyed consistently high ratings for 20 years), the reality is strikingly obvious.
As Politico and others have reported, this is part of the changing politics of late night TV, with the Obama White House now moving to seize control of late night TV, with Fallon acting as little more than a White House spokesman whenever the need arises.

In addition to images of President Obama’s address to the American public on Sunday night, it has emerged that the dramatic photos of Obama, Biden, Hillary Clinton and members of the White House security team watching the assassination of Bin Laden “live” were in fact completely staged, casting further doubt on the ever-changing official account of the operation.
The staging of the Obama speech photo is embarrassing, but the staging of the situation room photos, which were heavily promoted by the establishment media, falsely presented as evidence that Obama, Biden and Clinton saw the assassination of Osama live, and used by the White House to lend credence to the fairytale they were busily scripting, are damning.

DHS Gave Muslim Brotherhood

A newly released document obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request confirms that the State Department ordered the Department of Homeland Security to spare members of the Muslim Brotherhood traveling to the US in 2012 a TSA pat down or any kind of secondary screening.
The one page document (PDF), obtained by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, shows that members of a Muslim Brotherhood delegation traveling through Minneapolis Airport, New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and Dulles Airport were handed expedited entry known as “port courtesy,” which is normally reserved for high ranking government officials and dignitaries. At the time, the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate Mohamed Morsi, later deposed, had not been elected president.
